Mean High Water Springs

Mark Finlayson - Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Councils often refer to MHWS in their rules as the basis for yard setbacks etc. We are often required to show this ‘line’ on our plans, unfortunately for us (and in the words of the Baldrick) the sea is a big blue wobbly thing! Furthermore, it’s rising!!

Professional knowledge and judgment is required to ascertain this theoretical level and thus produce a ‘line’ on a plan. There are many techniques and methods that can be utilised and our team work hard to ensure that the ‘line’ we show is correct and will stand the scrutiny of expert review and the courts.

If MHWS is important to your project let us know early and we will ensure its right.

BCL - Your Island Surveyors

Mark Finlayson - Tuesday, March 09, 2010

Great Barrier, Rakino and Waiheke Islands have all been visited by our teams over the last few months. We love working on the Islands! Whether it’s a fishing lodge on a rocky islet, a bach on Medlands or a bush hideaway we are your team.

Another successful cliff survey

Mark Finlayson - Thursday, November 13, 2008

Cliff face surveys are part and parcel of the BCL survey diet. This particularly picturesque survey was carried out by our team in April and presented a number of challenges. The window of opportunity was small with access only possible for two hours during the lowest tides of the month.

We managed to carry out the survey of the cliff base without even getting our feet wet!

Here we used the latest laser technology, allowing for a very accurate +/-5mm survey of the cliff face and other remote features, without having to access the steep and dangerous cliff. The data provided to the engineers included the cliff face, dip and strike of strata and location of vegetation. The information was collated quickly and supplied to the engineers the following morning.

We love a challenge.
