In 1883 C.F. Dowsett placed his first peg in the fine soil of a quickly developing Taranaki dairy region, with that humble action a legacy began. A spirit of hard endeavour, honesty, loyalty and camaraderie with clients and workmates was born and that spirit has been passed across the generations to his great grandson and founder of BCL Surveyors, Thomas Bretherton. Tom founded BCL Surveyors in 1997 after many years working in the surveying industry. He had a vision of a company that would provide a high level of personal attention and service, a company that would produce the best quality surveys and provide the best possible advice to its valuable clients.

Mark Finlayson joined Tom soon after the company's inception, he had honed his surveying skills overseas on projects that include the London Underground, Middle Eastern oil rigs, oil pipeline surveys in Papua New Guinea and laying fibre optic cables throughout South East Asia. His skills in surveying process management combined with Tom’s uncompromising work ethic have created a company that is producing industry leading plans and digital information. Personal service and sound advice have lead to strong growth, this growth has been fuelled by client referrals – the best indication of a great team.

The company vision for the future is to be the best survey team in New Zealand, to set new benchmarks for service and products. We are dedicated to working hard on steady growth, growth based on client referrals. To achieve our goal it is vital that we continue with our programme of improvement. The enhancement of our core products and services is only possible if a balanced and controlled growth plan is in place. This means finding the right people to complement the existing team, expanding the processes and keeping pace with the latest innovations in equipment and software.
